Picture this: You're cruising along St. Pete's stunning coastline, rod in hand, salt spray in your face. Capt. Michael's at the helm, using his years of local knowledge to put you right where the fish are biting. We're talking about a solid 4 hours of fishing time, giving you plenty of chances to hook into some feisty mackerel or that bucket-list tripletail. The captain's got all the gear and know-how you need, so all you have to do is show up ready for some fun. And let me tell you, when that reel starts singing, you'll be glad you came.
On this trip, we'll be using a mix of techniques to target our fishy friends. For king mackerel, we might do some trolling with live bait or lures. It's a blast watching those speedsters chase down a bait. When we're after tripletail, we'll switch gears and do some sight fishing. These oddball fish love to hang out near floating objects, so we'll cruise around looking for them and then make precise casts to entice a bite. Capt. Michael will show you the ropes, so don't worry if you're new to these methods. By the end of the day, you'll be casting like a pro.

King Mackerel: These are the speedsters of the sea, and they're a top target for good reason. Kings can grow over 50 pounds, and when they hit, hold on tight! They're known for blistering runs that'll have your drag screaming. We typically find them in the warmer months, from spring through fall. The fight of a king mackerel is something every angler should experience – it's like hooking into a torpedo.
Tripletail: Don't let their weird looks fool you; tripletail are one of the coolest fish you can catch in these waters. They're masters of disguise, often floating sideways near the surface to mimic debris. But once hooked, they put up a stubborn fight that'll test your skills. Tripletail are around most of the year, but the bite really heats up in the summer. And here's a bonus – they're excellent table fare if you're looking to bring home dinner.
Lately, the king mackerel bite has been on fire. We've been seeing some solid 20-30 pounders coming over the rails, with a few monsters pushing 40 pounds. The tripletail action has been steady too, with most fish in the 5-10 pound range. These "floating fish" have been hanging around channel markers and buoys, giving us some exciting sight fishing opportunities. Remember, it's not just about size – the thrill of spotting a tripletail and making that perfect cast is hard to beat.
Look, St. Petersburg's waters are teeming with fish, and this half-day trip is your ticket to getting in on the action. With Capt. Michael's expertise, you're set up for a day of bent rods and tight lines. Whether you're dreaming of that smoker king mackerel or the unique challenge of tripletail, we've got you covered. Spots fill up fast, especially during peak seasons, so don't wait to lock in your date. Grab your sunscreen, bring your sense of adventure, and let's get out there and make some fishing memories. The fish are waiting – are you ready to catch 'em?

Kings are one of the fastest fish in these waters, and they put on a show when hooked. Most run 15-30 pounds, but 50+ pounders aren't unheard of. We find them in 40-150 foot depths, often around reefs or wrecks. Spring and fall are prime seasons as they migrate through. Kings are voracious feeders - they'll hit live bait, dead bait, or artificials like spoons and plugs. Trolling is effective, but live bait fishing can be more exciting. These fish make blistering runs and often sky out of the water. Their meat is good eating, but limit consumption due to mercury. Pro tip: use wire leaders - their razor-sharp teeth will slice through mono in a heartbeat. Kings are a blast to catch and release or take home for the grill.

Tripletail are a unique catch here in St. Pete. These odd-looking fish can reach 3 feet and 40 pounds, though most we see are 18 inches and 2-13 pounds. They're ambush predators, often floating sideways near the surface to mimic debris. We usually find them around structure like buoys or floating weeds from April to October. Sight-casting is the way to go - they spook easy, so cast past them and work your bait in slowly. Live shrimp or small crabs are top baits. Tripletail put up a scrappy fight for their size and taste great too, similar to snapper. One local trick: overcast days are best for spotting their dark silhouettes against the water. Just watch those razor-sharp gill plates when handling them!
